School Trains Persons with Disabilities to Be Competent

(2026.8.10.)

Situated in Pothonggang District, Pyongyang, is the vocational training school for persons with disabilities run by the Central Committee of the Korea Federation for the Protection of the Persons with Disabilities.

At the school persons with disabilities who have reached working age are acquiring various skills and abilities according to their aptitudes and hopes.

The school was built over 10 years ago according to the state policy on the protection of persons with disabilities.

The school teaches various skills such as hairdressing, beauty treatment, clothing, food processing and assembly and repair of electronics.

Pak Chung Il, a person with locomotive disabilities, teaches at the school.

It was twenty years ago that he lost his legs in an accident as he attended the then Huichon College of Posts and Telecommunications.

He fell into despair, but thanks to a state measure he could work his study through the college.

After graduation he was qualified as an engineer in information engineering and began to work at an information and telecommunications unit.

While in work, he keenly realized how benevolent the socialist system is as it injects vigour and hope into the lives of persons with disabilities and wanted to convince them that any of them are able to contribute to social progress when they decide to do.

So he volunteered to teach at the school.

He and many of his fellow teachers are working hard to improve the teaching contents, methods, conditions and environment on a constant basis as suited to the features of the students with disabilities and build their practical abilities.

Graduates, who studied to their heart’s content and brought their hopes and talents into bloom enjoying state benefits at school, are now rendering services to different sectors, contributing to national prosperity, said Pak Chung Il.
